To be a Whacker, or not to be a Whacker…

Now now now…  Dirty thoughts out of your head please.  A ‘Whacker’ is defined as someone unofficial who places emergency lights on their personal vehicle for various purposes.  Many of my friends are or have been whackers at some point, including myself.  While I did try to help out as much as possible at traffic accidents, and fires, I was still very much unofficial.  That being said, I never used my lights in an improper manner…  Okay well there was that ONE time…  But sometimes temptation gets the best of all of us.

Regardless, dispite anyones excuses, having emergency lights, and even sirens on personal vehicles labels you as a whacker.  There is no need for it… Especially in a city with fully equipted full time police force, and full time paid firefighters and ambulance service.  This is where RESPOND comes in.  RESPOND in Mississauga is a team of wanna-bes who patrol the streets of Peel and York region looking for action.  They also do work on the provincial 400 series highways.

I say wanna-bes because they all generally drive cars which look exactly the same as police cars.  Some have actual Ford Police Interceptors, and others have Impalas, and still others have Dodge Chargers.  They are mostly done up with undercover lighting and dark tinted windows so they are very hard to distinguish from a regular police car.

Now when I used to do similar stuff, we did things a little differently.  Sure people (like the RESPOND crew) would laugh at us…  We would be driving around in vans and SUV’s (purposely avoiding looking anything remotely like a police car), carrying tons of gear including upwards of 40 to 50 traffic cones per vehicle,  temporary stop signs and various other equipment which can’t fit in your standard cop car.  That is why we were there…  We carried that equipment, when the cops couldn’t.  In this way we were helpful and useful.  If you look at react, few of their vehicles actually have any more safety equipment then the standard cop car.  They have no official real powers unless a cop is on scene.  So you have to question, how useful are these people?

Now now, I am sure that these RESPOND people will try to justify their purpose and use, and lean on their agreement with the city of Mississauga to justify what they do.  It is great that a city is promoting volunteers yes,  but why not run it themselves?  You can usually tell a person is a full on whacker, when they deny that they are a whacker.  They will fumble for reasons as to why they have lights on their vehicle.  The may also whine and bitch about the name calling.  It will sometimes hurt their feelings (read egos).

Having grown up myself, I realize how silly what we did was sometimes.  But other times I know I did help, and I could very well have saved someones life.  This is sometimes the problem in urban centers.  You get people who WANT to help, but there is no outlet for them to help.  All the emergency services are paid staff only, and outside towns generally will not take in outsiders on their volunteer roster.

I am lucky enough to be getting into the fire services soon.  My jeep has no flashing lights on it yet, but when I do get into the service I will ensure I have enough lights to ensure my safety if I ever had to stop for an accident / respond to a call.

Carrier Drive Fire – Toronto

While looking through some of my photos, I found this amazing photo.  Sometimes I surprise myself, really…

This was a plastics factory on Carrier Drive, in Toronto which caught fire in late 2005 if I recall.  It became fully engulfed and went to a 3 Alarm fire.  I forget the name of the factory, but the google map shows it here.  (In case Google updates their imagery, I have saved the photo here).

I was located in the parking lot on Humber College Blvd when I took the above shot.  I had to zoom in quite a ways.  You can see the top of the bus shelter in the photo, located at the corner of Humber College and Carrier Drive.  I think I really captured the essence of these fire fighters in action in this photo.  I also used this photo to prove that yes…  Buildings constructed of steel do melt and collapse.  Those who say they don’t obviously do not know much about physics and chemestry.

Here is another photo from that event.

I was able to get this close because I was part of the media.  As good excuse as any to get close to the action.  You can see those white piles of material in the google image I linked above.  This was taken from the East side in the parking lot off of Woodbine Downs Blvd.

Circuit City Sale???

So I got curious, and decided to go to Circuit City with my friend to laugh at all the poor souls who were being ripped off.  Circuit City is having a ‘going out of business sale’.  But unlike most going out of business sales, this one was not actually a sale.

The only things we saw which were a reasonable price, were the Music CD’s and video DVD’s.  Everything else was sale priced at least 15% higher then the regular every day prices at other stores like Best Buy.

For example:

This simple ISA computer power cord (which can be purchased for about 50 cents at some bulk suppliers, and about 7 dollars (for a name brand Belkin Cable, such as this) at various other stores.  This was being sold without any packaging.  Guess for how much???

The original price was NOT 20 bucks…  There is no way a simple passive power cable is worth 20 bucks.  Let alone 12 bucks.

Lets look at a plasma TV now…

While we were standing there we looked up the model number of this exact TV on Best Buys site…  Their every day price is $1400-ish as I recall.  Nowhere near $2,300…  and $200 less then Circuit City’s going out of business sale price.

Nothing at Circuit City I saw was even remotely considered a ‘deal’.  In this day and age with this economy, stores such as this deserve to be shut down.  Screw your customers and this is what happens.

Cult Watch…

My friend The Odd Emperor on AngelOfThyNight.com posted a link to a funny but accurate cult ‘How To’ video.

I think it is worth a posting here.

It is amazing how cult leaders can con others into a state of submission.  Truth be told about 40% of the population is susceptible to such a submission at any given time if it is coming from the right person.

Cults like Scientology and the Moonies and other similar cults will generally attach themselves to potential members, as a supportive counterpart during a time of need or depression.  In todays day and age, stress and depression are rampant in society, and cults like these are cashing in on this.

I am no expert on cults, but I do find them interesting to study in the psychological aspect.  I will likely be posting more about them on this blog as well.

Canadian Road Trip!

I am planning on taking a canadian road trip as soon as I can save up the money to do so.  This post will outline some of my desired destinations.

First thing I will want to do is drive to Toronto.  Hopfully meet up with Avatar-X at his apartment to shoot the shit, then drive up Yonge Street all the way to Newmarket.  I will stop and see my mother and father and likely spend the night in that area.  I would like to visit my sister in Gravenhurst, and then I would like to drive up to Sudbury along Hwy 400 / 69 and then across to North Bay.  Then maybe down to Huntsville and stay the night in Huntsville.  Then drive through Algonquin the next morning, stopping in Whitney for lunch.  A drive into Ottawa from Whittney would be nice, as I haven’t been to Ottawa in years.  Might even stop at the Diefenbunker on the way there.  Hop on the 416 to the 401, stopping in Kingston, and then Belleville where hopfully I will spend the night ;)   The next morning I head back to Buffalo, NY.

Along the way I hope to sample many Canadian things.  Pizza Nova, Harveys (Burger Joint), and Poutine just to name a few.

Sounds like a fun trip :)   Along the way I hope to meet up with all my friends from Ontario.

Nightbird

I do not really talk much about Nightbird on here.  Likely because she has her own blog to express her views, and if there is anything we need to discuss, we can do so in real time without having to resort to poetic posts about deep feelings and such :)

Nightbird and I are best friends.  We have lived with each other for about 4 years now.  We live well together, and the relationship is very stable, open and respectful.

Nightbird and I decided to get married at a very low point in our lives.  We had been there for each other at a very tough time when there was no one there for either of us, it seemed.  To that, I am very grateful to have someone who loves and cares for me as much as she does.  I also love and care for her very deeply.

I never really planned to get married this young.  I always thought I would settle down in my early 30’s or so.  But I grew old fast.  We decided to get married under very harsh circumstances in our lives, this commitment was one I made to a friend, so we would always be there for each other.

Nightbird has helped me grow in many ways.  She has domesticated me to a degree, and has taught me a lot about financial and personal responsibility.  Meanwhile I have been trying to help her overcome her rough childhood and attempting to socialize her.

When Nightbird found a friend who seemed to really care for her, I encouraged her to explore that relationship.  It was a relationship with another female, and it was at this point that we agreed our marriage would be open.  She went and met her friend, and indeed had a lot of fun.  I would stay on the sidelines and offer advice and generally stay out of it unless I was asked my opinion of something.  While I was a little sad to see her go off to visit her friend whenever she went, I was happy that she had found someone she could connect with.

Of course with her meeting someone, it opened the door for me to meet someone.  I however was not in a rush to do this.  I was kind of glad to be out of the dating scene for once, and the thought of finding someone who suited my interests was unbearable.  I continued to befriend people online and generally maintain a distance with anyone I got very close with.

When I met Kelly 2 weekends ago, I really did not know how Nightbird would handle it.  Kelly was very important to me, and had helped me through some difficult times online.  The night Kelly showed up, Nightbird and myself both met her for dinner at Texas Roadhouse.  We had some mutual conversation and when the time came to say goodbye, I kissed Nightbird and we parted ways.  I am not very sure what happened between that point and the time I got home, but I do know that Nightbird was missing me more then ever.

While there was a slight discussion as to why I didn’t email her more then once the entire weekend (it was a road trip, we were driving most of the time), after everything was explained, all was good and she was interested to hear the details of the trip.  I admire Nightbirds strength in this relationship as this situation was likely a very hard one for her to deal with.  Not only does she let me meet with my girlfriend, but she respects Kelly, and enjoys socializing with her in game.

I do not think I appreciate her enough sometimes and I would like this post to try and show how awesome she is, and how very unique she is.  She should never change, and I do love her very much for who she is.  I often take her presence for granted, but I know if I ever lost her, I would be devastated and completely lost myself.

I love you NB :)
