UE: Ontario Power Company

I first explored this gem on my birthday in 2005.  It was February and it was cold out.  With snow and ice on the sidewalks surrounding the famous Niagara Falls.  At 1 am on a cold February night, we walked down to the boardwalk.  Only a few random tourists were there taking photos of the Falls.  (with the flash on of course…….  because you KNOW that will come out!!!)   Near the Maid of the Mist building there is an access ramp which runs down the cliff to the abandoned power station.  We hopped a small fence, and got onto this road.

Walking down the road was fairly uneventful.  It was interesting thinking of the tourists above us along the board walk, likely thinking ‘wow, i can’t believe I am here taking photos of Niagara Falls’.  Meanwhile we were busy walking straight into the bowels of the beast, or so it seemed.

The walk down the ramp seemed to take forever.  It was icy and slippery, with some snow on the ground.  Ours were the only tracks in the snow.  I knew if someone saw these tracks, we would likely be compromised.  But alas, the potential findings of a mostly unexplored power plant were a stronger power then the threat of getting caught.

When we got to the bottom, the scene was impressive.  The massive falls a backdrop to this building built into the cliff side.  It did not take us long to find an unlocked door (it is amazing how people forget to lock doors in these places) on the roof, and we let ourselves in.

A shot of one of the roof access doors.  The roof itself was so rough and covered in fallen rocks, it was hard to tell it was actually a roof.

Once inside, we were able to relax a little, as we were out of view from tourists.  We took a few minutes setting up cameras and flashlights.  During which I took this photo of an old stretcher.  I found it was kind of curious to have a stretcher here in the fire escape.  But then I realized it was likely used for jumpers.  People who landed on the roof.

My first view of the generating room was awesome.  I mean I knew the place was big, but wow.  Previous to this, I had only been in Hearn and a few other locations of similar size.  They were all fairly opened up and lit by natural light or still had some power.  It was a lot different coming into a room the size of this which was pitch black.

These turbines were driven by water fed from huge tunnels (pipes) under Niagara Parkway.  These tunnels were so large you could drive trucks in them.  But we shall get back to that.  The turbines themselves produced (i think) 300 Hz (or 600 Hz) AC power which was used mainly for industrial applications.  The plant was modified to produce 60 Hz in the 70’s and continued in operation until 1999.  In 1999 the land which the transformer station for the plant was located on, was purchased by the Casino.  Parts of the Transformer station have been incorporated into the construction of the Casino.

It is actually quite interesting that this location was used to help develop my favorite game, Left4Dead.  At least I am pretty sure it was.  Take a look at these following photographs and compare them to in game screen shots.

Taken from one end of the plant, looking down the length of the plant.  This image attempts to show you the scale.

Granted there is less detail, but even the ceiling rafters seem similar.  It is even possible my photos were used as reference material for the game designers.  It is very hard to say really.

The control room was kind of neat.  But fairly simple really.  It was nice however to see a control room which was not trashed and vandalized like the Hearn control room.

What was also very cool to find was John Candy’s signature.  He was in this power station during the filming of Canadian Bacon.

Sadly, in later visits we found that someone had stolen this section of the wall.  It was actually physically cut out of the metal.  Very sad.

But enough about that…

Lets see some of the cool shit I found.

Behind the control room there was a sealed door.  One similar to those you may find on a submarine.  We were able to open it after a lot of work.  It had been rusted shut.  Luckily some WD-40 was laying around.

This door led to the transformer station and valve chamber.  It was literally a 60 or so degree slope heading up into the cliff, upwards towards street level.  It looked sketchy, and possibly dangerous, so of course we ventured in.

It was fairly long.  and Was a few minutes until we got to a sort of landing.  We were actually climbing on top of a makeshift stairway on top of a giant pipe.  The landing was at the valve chamber level.

Some of us stopped for a rest there, while myself and a few others continued up the cement stairs.  The stairs were covered in slimy calcite and there was water flowing down them constantly.

We kind of hoped that it would come out into some storage room in the back of the Casino, and maybe we could grab a bag of money or something, hehe.   But really, we were curious where it led, since the casino was built ontop of the transformer station, and where else would this lead?

Eventually we got up to a upper landing, and there was a plywood board over a opening in the ceiling.  We could not move it, and there was no other way out.  We turned around and returned to the valve chambers.  From here we climbed up a very narrow opening into the valve chamber.

It was quite neat being in the valve chamber.  Knowing you were a few stories below the street was kind of neat in its own way.  Also knowing that few people have likely been in here since the plant closed.  Knowing that we did have to really work to get that door opened.

It was also neat to find images like this one in the public archives.  Its like ‘hey! I have seen that!’.

The valve chambers ran the length of the plant, and there were more then just valves in there.  I got several artistic photos in there.

Eventually we found a modern stainless steel staircase, which led to a newer area, and an elevator.  The elevator led back down to the plant.  And more stairs led up to street level.  Standing there behind the double glass ’store style’ doors looking out onto Niagara Falls Parkway it was so tempting to call it a night.  By this time it was about 6am, and the thought of climbing back down all the way into the plant, only to have to walk up a long road again was not really ideal.  We unlocked the glass doors from the inside and left that way, leaving the doors unlocked.   Surprisingly they remained unlocked for several weeks, allowing us a few more visits, before they were finally discovered and re-locked.

All in all it was a fun location.   Last I heard, everything had been cleared out of it,  including the generators, and it was being used as a storage space for the Park system.

Fun times!

How Hard is it? (maybe TL;DR)

I have been wanting to write for the past few days, however I either never get the time, or can never really put my thoughts into words.  This post will dive deeper into my emotions then I usually allow myself to go in such a posting.  It dives into my relations with my friends and the people around me, as well as me thoughts and desires in all of this.

I seem to have few friends who stay around for long.  Perhaps I push them away, perhaps they stray away on their own.  Maybe I am just a bad friend.  I am unsure.

Of course when I moved from Toronto to Buffalo, I kind of lost touch with most of my Toronto friends.  That will happen when you move, I suppose.

I tend to dislike phone calls.  Texting and instant messaging are my prefered forms of communication.  Would this annoy friends?  I am unsure, I find texting more convienant.  On that note, I also tend to dislike boring ’small talk’.  I enjoy discussing current events, and having meaningful deep conversations about anything from the economy to science to life…   There are some friends who will just message me and ask me how I am doing 5 times a day…  And thats all they say.  I suppose this is alright, but I dunno,  I don’t always feel like answering after the 5th message…   Its like ‘I am fine…   I was fine 2 hours ago..   why wouldn’t I be fine now?’.  Is it just me, or would that annoy anyone else as well?

I know I am opinionated, I will say things as I see them.  I am not afraid to hurt peoples feelings or loose a friend over something if it meant the difference between lying or telling the truth.  Perhaps this is why I have so few friends in the real world.  Are people so lost in the make believe world that society has created for us, that they expect to be lied to and not given straight answers anymore?

<paragraphs removed due to inaccuracy>

Now Geo and I got along fairly well.  I kinda thought of him like my big brother, and I did care for him quite a bit.  He was an urban exploration buddy of mine.  But we often did other things as well.

Then one weekend it all changed.  I was supposed to meet up with him to explore a sewer system.  So I gathered some others and waited at the spot for him to show up.   He never did.  I called him several times…  no answer.  Geo rode a motor bike everywhere he went and had gotten into a few accidents, so I became concerned.  I went home that night hoping to find an email from him, or something…  But I found nothing in my inbox.

The next morning I had plans with him to meet up at his place, as a friend was coming in from out of town.  I drove out to his place, after trying to call him a few times…  and began to knock on his door.   No answer.  I was worried, but also hesitant.  I started going through everything in my mind trying to think if I somehow pissed him off…  I couldn’t think of anything, so I imagined he was likely injured or something was seriously wrong.  I continued to knock, at this point completely lost as to what I should do?  should I leave?  should I call an ambulance?  I dunno?

Eventually I heard movement, and he ran to the door and flung it opened and yelled that he was sleeping, and told me to get lost…   It was very much unlike him to do this, and I was shocked.  But I left him alone ever since.   Was I in the wrong here?  was this a misunderstanding?   I don’t know really…

In the search to find a new local friend here in Buffalo, I have always come up short.  Few people seem to have similar interests as I do, so I don’t really try anymore.

I seem to connect better with females anyhow.  I have a online friend in Ontario who I talk to often, and she has been there for me in some hard times, likewise I have been there for her…  But wait…  Am I not I married?    Why yes I am.  You see my wife and I have an open marriage.  It is kind of complicated, but it seems to work out alright.

On that note, I am sure some people may say ‘Oh well, you are married,  your best friend should be your wife…’  and some other people may even say ‘you should have a baby…’.

Well,  my best friend is my wife…  But we don’t want a baby.  Also, my wife doesn’t enjoy that ‘guy’ stuff I am interested in.  And that is the stuff I am looking for companionship on.  She would rather play WoW and stay in.  A female friend would be very cool.  To find a female who would be into similar things that I am…  wow.  But of course few females want to even socialize with married men it seems.  And because Iam brutally honest to a fault sometimes about myself, this usually turns most females away.  The ones who aren’t turned away are only looking for sex it seems, and while this would be alright with my wife, it is not something I am looking for.

As funny as it sounds, I am not after sex.  I can get sex anytime I want really.  What I am after is someone to hang out with, and joke around with and generally have a good time with.  Male or Female, it doesn’t matter, just someone who I can meet in Real Life and talk to, and hang out with.

I suppose Urban Exploration was my best avenue from which I could make friends.  I imagine that most of the people who are visiting the website to read about my adventures in the Buffalo Memorial Aud would of loved to be with me on those adventures.  But I do not really explore anymore.  I can’t at the moment due to immigration and such.  Plus, having lived in Buffalo, abandoned buildings do not really have the same attraction they once had.  And I am more concerned about safety then ever before.

So without Urban Exploration, who am I?  Well I suppose I am just your average radio geek.  How exciting is that really?  Not very exciting I imagine.  I mean, I do not own a TV or really follow any sports, therefore I have very little in common with many people.

It seems that my most successful social skills would be in helping people with their problems online.  Often in WoW or even through various other people I meet randomly, I often become the counseler.  Able to help people through tough times, and able to read into someone in a way and show them a part of themselves they never really noticed before.

One of my friends I have helpped, told me I should open up on my blog and write about my personal feelings more…  Well here I am.  I am sure the 4000 or so visitors I get a day who want to look at photos of the Aud want to read about my feelings…  HA!  But really..   This will just be one of those TL;DR posts no one really reads I imagine.  None the less, it was nice to write it all out.

People are lucky to have someone to chat to when things go wrong, friends are important.  Be sure to hold onto those which are worth hanging onto.  I would like to know how hard it is to find a good (real life, non-internet) friend and hang onto them?  Because for me it has been very difficult it seems.

Computer Project

Well I got my Processor and other such items today.  Installed them all, and the computer is humming along nicely.

Windows installed nicely, and the computer is humming along amazingly.  I am impressed at the performance so far.  I had NO ISSUES what so ever with the DDR3 RAM and the Intel DP455G Motherboard, which is apparently an issue with some people.  Everything worked perfectly out of the box.

The Q6600 processor is very nice and I am happy I got it.  The Cooling fan keeps it nice and cool, in fact it is the coolest thing int he box,  the GeForce 9800GT is the hottest thing, pushing about 114 F when I am playing Left4Dead at max settings.

I have to say I am glad I now have a future proof computer.  DDR3 and all that Jazz.  Sadly the HD Audio headers on the motherboard don’t seem to pin out exactly to the audio plugs for my front panel connections.  However I am sure I can and will be able to re-wire it to work around that issue in the coming days.

On the subject of Audio, I have a PreSonus Firebox audio device which is a 6×8 audio mixer system capable of accepting studip microphones and instruments, as well as midi devices, at a professional sound quality.  Sadly on my Dual Processor PIII 800 computer which I have just retired, the Firebox did not function properly.  It never acted as a sound card,  just as a mic preamp,  I had to physically take the line out from the firebox and stick it back into the computer sound card input for it to be able to work properly.  Now however, my microphone and audio is all digitally transmitted as it should be, and it acts as an external sound card.  I may completely abandon the onboard sound card now and just use the Firebox since it sounds so clean.  The only problem is the slight delay, which is fine for watching movies, however it is horrible for speaking into a microphone and hearing your own voice a few miliseconds after you say the words.

I am still in the process of transfering the remaining files from the old Dual PIII 800 to the AMD machine,  And installing various games onto the New Computer.  Of course one of the first things I installed was Mozilla Firefox!  I can’t stand Internet Explorer.  Firefox for the win!

UPDATE:

It seems the IDT Audio Device on the Motherboard is not really made for the applications I am trying to get it to preform.  I basically wish to be able to talk on my microphone and have ONLY my voice enter the computer as its own channel, and be able to be heard in game, loud and clear.  Meanwhile, I wish to play music from my other computer into the new computer, without it being heard in game.  This sound card system (IDT) while it does have a Input Monitor, does NOT have the option to listen to other input devices, unless they are selected as the recording device.

On top of all of this, I found a bad solder joint in my Firebox mixer, which I repaired last night.

Fun times!  I feel like I am back in the radio industry again.

What I am likely going to have to do is install a ‘SoundBlaster’ sound card I have kicking around here, and use that instead of the on board device.

UPDATE:

I may have been able to figure out a way to do this with the stock system…  We shall see how long it lasts.

UPDATE:

Indeed I have found a solution which seems to be solid.  I won’t bore you with the details..  lets just say I want able to route it so it would work…  :)

Photo Review: The Aud Photo

The famous ‘Aud’ Photo above was taken by me in early 2007. While I have explained a few times about how it was photographed, I still get asked about it. At the time, Demolition had not started on the Aud. Therefore the building was completely void of any electricity. To take this photo I had to bring my own spotlights. On previous visits, I had experimented with many other methods of taking a similar photo, from setting up a 12 volt strobe light system, similar to what you would find on a police car, to walking around with camera flashes and/or flashlights while the exposure was in progress.

I finally decided to lug the spotlight in. And while myself and my friend opened our shutters at the same time, I began to light paint the arena with the spotlight, ensuring that I lit up every single portion of the frame. I believe this was a 2 minute exposure.

Frankly the result is likely the last best photograph of the inside of the Aud prior to demolition. Because of this I have had a few requests to purchase the photo, the photo has also been featured on WIVB News Channel 4 during their evening news for a story on the Aud. Some people actually requested my negatives and such. Now I may not sell many photographs or prints, but I am not really keen to sell my negatives. I will however sell prints at a reasonable price. Email me to inquire about that.

For some more photos of the Aud, please visit my in depth tour, located here. I have even more photos then what are located on this site, however I decided not to post too many. If you have a request to see a specific part of the Aud, please feel free to email me and ask if I have it on film, because I likely do.

Anyhow, thanks for your interest.

Roadwolf,

US Airways Hudson Landing

A US Airways jet landed today in the Hudson River in New York. Initial reports were that it was infact a uncontrolled crash, however it is looking more and more like a controlled emergency landing at this point. The plane is still in tact and passengers are exiting the plane onto ferrys and rescue boats. It does not appear that anyone was injured in this crash. The cause is as yet unknown, but could have been caused by a flock of birds which the plane flew through, disabling both engines.

Emergency Water Landings are possible for large jets such as this Airbus A320. They are however very difficult to preform. The pilots of this aircraft were obviously very skilled. Water landings have been a design feature of airplanes such as this since the 70’s. The belly of all larger airplanes is smooth in order to help with such landings and also to improve airflow while in the air of course.

This was actually one of the reasons why the DC-9 jets and MD-1011 jets had their engines mounted on the tail of the plane instead of on the wings. It allowed for an easier water landing. This Airbus A320 has 2 engines located on the wings, it is very possible that the engines were sheared off when they hit the water, however it is apparent from watching MSNBC’s footage that the wings are still in tact.

I do imagine that there will only be minor injuries and exposure to the cold issues with passengers. I do not imagine that there were any serious injuries. Both pilots would of had to be fully alert and functional to preform this landing with this degree of safety and success, so I imagine they are both alright as well.

Kudos to a job well done pilots! Whatever the reason for needing to land, you guys pulled off an amazing water landing!

The Mystery of Life

Indeed the mystery of life is a deep topic. Many people have many beliefs as to our origins, and purpose. I would like to share my beliefs with you today.

Ever since I learned about it, I have always been a supporter of Darwin’s theory. While I was raised Roman Catholic, it just didn’t seem logical to me that a story like Adam and Eve or the Creation of the earth was in any way factual.

This belief was strengthened when I heard that scientists have isolated a single common ancistor which gave rise to every multi-cellular life form we know of today, including us. Thanks to the discovery of DNA we have been able to isolate that common bond that we share with all animals, and study it to figure out our past.

Actual DNA

Actual DNA in a Test Tube

In this way, scientists have discovered that all life on earth has evolved from the simple, humble sponge. It may seem funny that animals as complex and intelligent as ourselves, capable of even questioning our existence derived from a simple sponge. Sponges in fact seem so lifeless and alien that we normally wouldn’t even classify them as animals.

Sponges today, have not changed much since their humble beginings. A sponge is basically a mish-mash of various cells which all work together preforming different tasks for the common good. Some cells will create spicules which are rigid structures which help develop the body of the sponge (in fact, your bath sponge is purely made up of these spicules). The flesh of the sponge has many small holes in it which water and particles (including single celled orginisms) flow through. Once inside, various cells will consume single celled orginisms which pass through the sponge. Driving this pumping and suction action are tiny hairs which wave and pulsate quickly to help pump the water through the sponge. In this manner the sponge is working very hard for such a small amount of food. But the point is that it is working for the common good of all the cells in the sponge.

Sponge Pumping Water

A sponge pumping water.

How did life (single celled life) happen on earth before the sponge evolved? Well I do not believe anyone has proven the origins of all life at this time. But I imagine it will not be too far down the road when we are able to recreate life from nothing.

As humans, I believe that our existence is limited by our bodys ability to keep our brain cells alive. If our brain dies, then we die. Thats it! Why is this the case? Why can’t we reincarnate ourselves like the sponge. Well simply because we have evolved to have shorter lives in exchange for mobility. In order to be as smart as we are and as mobile, we had to develop a central nervous system and a command center of sorts in order to process input and react to that input. This system developed over a long period of time, but we now depend on this system. While it is true that the body itself can live without the brain, for the most part, the brain is what makes us individuals. Without it we are as simple as a sponge, billions of cells working for the common good without any direction.

I believe that ‘God’ and ‘Heaven’ are ideals for people who want to cling to a belief that life is more then just surviving and multiplying. Frankly the afterlife does not exist, there is no way for it to exist. It goes against science. If who we are is directly developed and maintained in our brains, then how would it be possible to export that into some sort of spirit form, so as to exist in some sort of afterlife? If someone can answer this in a scientific manner, then perhaps I will change my viewpoints.

I suppose in saying this, I am also stating that I do not really believe in ghosts. While yes the human brain can create some very strange images at times, especially while dreaming, I do not think there has ever been a confirmed physical case of a ghost causing problems. This is a big statement for me to make. I have spent time in some of North Americas most haunted structures and heard some very detailed accounts of ‘hauntings’ (in fact I have experienced some ‘ghostlike’ events myself). But it just does not compute. ‘Science’ is about comparing known quantities with unknown quantities and coming up with conclusions based on controlled tests, while ruling out all other possibilities. Quite frankly I have not seen any Paranormal Investigators who have accomplished anything nearly close to what amounts to scientific research on the paranormal.

That concludes this post. Food for thought indeed! I welcome comments as usual, you have to register on the blog in order to post a comment (to reduce spam). So please register and have your say!
