SB&D Route Update 0.1.6

This update touches briefly on the old Newfoundland route I have been working on.

To date the main line is now complete, measuring a whopping 270 miles!  Several branches still require some work.  As do some of the cities and a yard.

I have started work on landscaping, and am well underway.  I am aiming for a fairly wild, and lush route, yet still trying to keep the fps rates up there.  So I am putting highly detailed items within about 200 meters of the track, and away from the track I scale back dramatically.   You really cant tell from the track that this is the case.

Here are some shots of the work in progress:

These shots are taken from my laptop, which has a microsoft video adapter GPU.  Therefore they aren’t that great of a resolution…   but  the fact that I can play the game decently on such a computer, with so many trees and on such a large route, is a pretty good sign.

Avatar

So it took me a while to get around to seeing Avatar.  My wife and I happened to want to watch a movie at the theater this weekend.  After reviewing the movies which were playing, I picked Avatar – as it seemed to be the most interesting and intellectual movie available.

The reviews I have heard about the movie were always fairly negative.

Granted I did not know too much about the movie, even after it having been out for several months.  I had not read any teasers nor have I really studied it.   Plus the fact that I do not have a TV and therefore I suppose I missed a lot of television commercials for the movie?

None the less, for me the movie was very well done.   The graphics were mind blowing.  The plot line was pretty decent.  I wouldn’t say that the plotline was overly predictable at all times.  There were many twists and turns I did not expect.

The main character was an interesting choice.  I am unsure if he is handicapped in real life, but it really looks like he is.  I think that is amazing, not only to include a handicapped person as a main character, but also to hire a handicapped actor.

I think the military aspect of the movie was very overdone, and almost GI Joe-ish.  You would think in a hundred and fifty years from now we would of learn’t better ways to fight then using conventional ammunition…

I am not going to describe the plot line here, as I really do not want to classify it under another film.  It does have a unique plot line, which is similar to a few other films, but unique enough to define itself.

When I went into the movie theater, I thought for sure the movie was going to be bad, from everything people have said.  I came out of the theater refreshingly impressed.  Just goes to show you that you shouldn’t take other peoples advice all of the time ;)

Fire Hall stuff.

Well another year has rolled around.  The votes are in, and all I can say is that it will be interesting to see how this years officers handle a real call.  I am now on the Beer and Pop committee, the Bylaws committee, and of course the website committee.  All in all, I am still enjoying things there.  Although lately training has been less common due to the holidays.  Hopefully we get back to doing some interesting stuff soon.

Brown Spots on Leaves

Ever notice the brown spots on the leaves in the fall? if you notice BIG brown or black spots, you should destroy the leaf. It is actually a bad fungus which will re-infect the tree next year if the leaf is allowed to lay on the ground near the tree. :)

Weeds

I was eating lunch one day and being who I am I needed some form of entertainment.  For some reason unknown to myself rather than turning on my usual episodes of Futurama or South Park, I turned to a show I had never watched before; Weeds.  I’ve had them around for a long time but never taken the time to actually WATCH the show.  While munching on my food I watched the pilot.  5 hours later  I had finished the first season and excitedly started the second season.

This show is very well done, there is an amazing balance of the drug dealing aspect mixed with a suburban mother trying to survive with her two children.  The general plot is Nancy Botwin’s, our protagonist, husband has died of a heart attack and to maintain her lifestyle she starts to sell Marijuana in her neighborhood.  The town is the definition of boring town that tokes up to get by.  Hilarity and drama quickly ensue as her drug dealing and “burb mom” lifestyle slowly drift into a single life.

Something that I noticed right off, that was actually surprising, was the soundtrack.  It’s a strange mix of many different styles of music, generally about marijuana, that blend together and create the perfect atmosphere for this show.

I just finished the fourth season as I post this and I look forward to seeing season 5 as soon as I can.  If you have access and enjoy some comedy, drama and drugs mixed with everyday life, definitely check this show out.

They say marijuana isn’t addictive, but Weeds is.

Pet Peave: Wrong Side Cyclists

One major pet peave of mine is cyclists who ride on the wrong side of the road. Sure there is the argument that this method lets the cyclist see whats coming towards him, so he can react. But the problem is that drivers don’t expect it.

I have had 3 close calls at hitting cyclists in my lifetime while driving a vehicle. The 3rd happened today. I was conducting a completely legal and safe U Turn. and almost hit a cyclist coming the opposite way on the other side of the road. Luckily we both stopped several feet from each other.

The point is, that sure, okay, vehicles driving straight will see you. And you will see them. But vehicles turning corners, or U Turning, may not see you.

I know it feels more dangerous riding in the right side of the road, but in reality it is a lot safer. I am sure if you searched for stats online, you will find that most accidents involving cyclists have happened to wrong way cyclists. I know this because I have searched for these stats and found the results very interesting.
